It is a shield and a food for the soul.

First because forgiveness is a shield that protects us from many evils, many diseases and protects us from premature aging and poor health. That’s because it is not only good for our spirit and our soul, but also is good for our morale, our physical, mental health and so on.

Jesus does not want us to be sick and infirm, because we often live “swallowing” our resentments, our sorrows and our disappointments with life and with the people we meet along the way.

Forgiveness should not be lived only in some situations, it should be lived at all times of life! By asking Jesus to forgive seven times enough a brother, when he sinned against him, it is as if the Lord said to Peter, “If seven is already a perfect number, you need to take it to the extreme of perfection.” The Lord is very clear, forgiveness is not enough to be human, it must be a divine forgiveness! The way God forgives us is so we should forgive our neighbor, to our offender, our debtor.

All this because, to implore God for His forgiveness and His mercy, we want Him to have mercy on us and that He really forgives us of all sin we have committed that attack His presence in us and fail to honor Him when we sin against our neighbor.

God never denies us forgiveness, never denies his mercy, but the same God who forgives and is merciful, in the most extreme sense of the word, is also a just God. With the same measure that we use to forgive others is that we will also be forgiven by Him in the ultimate reality of our lives. If we spend all our life asking God’s forgiveness for our sins and He always forgives us, why, in our selfishness and our pride, do we just forgive our neighbor from time to time, when we find it convenient or when we have strength to do it ?

I know that forgiveness is not an automatic thing, forgiveness is not to say, “I will forgive!” Or “I’m already forgiving.” We need to want to forgive, this is the first step, God will help us accomplish the others, but the provision has to be our first. We need to look at our life and history and apply in all the relationships that we have already experienced the forgiveness of seventy times seven. So we will not deceive ourselves in our definitive encounter with God.

If we forgive very much we will also be forgiven!

God bless you!

Father Roger Araujo

Portuguese Version

Forgiveness is a shield that protects us from many physical ailments and spiritual and emotional illnesses.
