It is the day that changed the world. Indeed, if this day had not happened, we would be living in a totally different environment, for better or worse than we do today. Yet, before we look at the brightest day in Christianity, we have to remember this in context with the darkest day in Christianity.

What is the darkest day in the history of our faith. You can, I assume, name a whole host of names, the day Martin Luther nailed his theses to the Wittenberg Cathedral doors. In fact, during the Protestant Reformation St. Teresa of Avila said that the tactic used against Catholics was false accusations. She described it as a terrible time.

The day the western and eastern churches ex-communicated themselves. Name the darkness as you want. However, when we look at history, we can see the darkest day of Christiandom, the one that took away all hope, the one that shattered the faith of the followers of Jesus is part and parcel of this day. It is the day that Jesus died on the cross.

It could not possibly get worse than that. The person who changed peoples lives so intensely that His followers dropped everything to follow Him. He suffered execution as a common criminal. However, once that dark day happened, it opened the door to the brightest of days: His resurrection! You cannot have the resurrection without the death. You cannot have the greatest day in our faith, without the darkest day to precede it.

In fact, St. Paul reminds us that you cannot understand one day without the other. You cannot understand the resurrection without the death and you cannot understand the death without the resurrection. We look at both and we see Jesus’ resurrection and His death together and celebrate what He did for us!!

Presently, more than coincidentally, we are going through a severe persecution again as Catholics and have been since 2002. An Italian senator and philosopher exclaimed that this is a culture war. It is like a cold war of secularists against Catholics. It has its roots in a UN declaration that calls for silencing the political voice of the Catholic Church among other things.

It has come to a point that we have a choice, join the worldly or join Christ. It is the same choice given to the followers of Jesus at his death and resurrection. Follow the world or follow Christ. You have to remember something, however, those who followed the world followed it into disaster. Indeed, remember everything that the religious leaders of the people feared at the time of Jesus, and the basis of their putting Him to death, happened anyway forty years later: The complete destruction of their temple. Their political nation was eliminated from the face of the Earth and did not return for almost 2000 years.

Jesus foresaw this and wept over those whom He saw walk down the wrong path.

I often say that if I were to give God a name, he would be the God of Time. The reason is that everything we must do as people of faith is based on trusting our future to God. That means when times are tough, when we are living in a time that people in our country are trying to affect regime change against our church using a similar process of grabbing allies in other countries to affect this regime change, we need to have faith and hold on.

Our future is in God’s hands and we have no idea what the fruit of this attempt of regime change is against our Church, but we know which side we must be on, the side of Christ. If we choose to follow those who say ignore Christ we will be backing the losing side of a two horse race. They always lose, not because their enemies defeat them, it is because they think that they and not our God are the gods of time.

One of my favorite movies is Jurassic Park which is based on this principle. When you decide that you can control for all factors and seek to live under that belief, some uncontrollable factor takes hold. This is what the secularists do. This is why they all fail.

Today is the day to ask yourself whose side are you on, that of the Resurrected Christ or the world. Do we stand on the side of the one who defeated the greatest of all forces, death and not on the side of those who have declared themselves subjected to it.

Let us all stand on the side of Christ who has conquered death and leads us to follow Him into eternal life.

Photocredits: All via BigStockPhoto.com
Top: Jarek78
Top Middle: broker
Bottom Middle: Sufi70
Bottom: The Cali Cajun

Today is the most powerful day in Christianity.
