The connection between the episode of the washing of the feet and the Eucharist is made in this: The Lord loses Himself completely. Jesus had already incarnated and in doing so, He who is God became man with us. Made man, He humbled himself still more and confronted death.

In the Eucharist it is as if lowers himself still more y eclipses Himself completely: There he does not show his Divinity, nor his humanity. He loses himself completely and becomes food. In the form and appearance of bread and wine, He ecliplses Himself completely and converts Himself into a slave of our service.

All this in order that we may learn and abandon ourselves, in  order to free us from all selfishness, vanity and presumption. In order the humiliate ourselves, wash our feet of our brothers, in order to assume our position as slaves of Jesus.
