The lawyer and member of the Catholic Justice and Peace Commission of the Diocese of Vinh, Vietnam, Le Quoc Quan was arrested by police along with the doctor PhamHong Son.

The two were arrested on Thursday, April 7, for participating, days before,  in demonstrations in defense of another lawyer and human rights activist, Cu Huy Ha Vu,who was sentenced to seven years imprisonment “for anti-government propaganda. ”

According to witnesses of the Church in Vietnam, Le Quoc Quan is a practicing Catholic, an activist in human rights, deeply appreciated by the local community. Thelawyer had a close relationship in preparation for the seminar of Justice and Peace Commission of the Vietnamese bishops to be held in Saigon on 27 May with the theme”Justice and Peace in Vietnam today. ”

Le Quoc Quan studied in the United States after his return to Vietnam was distinguished by its commitment to the Church and in civil society, engaging in the defense of human dignity and human rights, coming to be part of the Justice and Peace Commission ofVinh.

The Justice and Peace Commission of the Episcopal Conference, the bishops formallyestablished in October 2010, began its work guided by the Bishop of Vinh, Nguyen ThaiHop Don Paul, the current president, and by Father Antoine Nguyen Ngoc Son, currentsecretary general.

The committee was inspired by the work of the Pontifical Council for Justice and Peacehas as its main objective the promotion of justice and peace in society according to theteachings of the Gospel and Catholic Social Teaching.

According to the commission itself, the its activities “represents a new hope for the Church and the Vietnamese society as a whole, especially in defense of the weak and oppressed, and to build a more just and fraternal society. ”
