What Happens When I Am in Mortal Sin?

The Church teaches us that grace or mortal sin destroys the heart of a person, for it breaks and separates the human being from God. Sins such as homicide, blasphemy, adultery and prostitution are sins against life and against God. While venial sins are sins that only aggravate the relation with God not breaking or separating.

In this post we are going to focus on mortal sin. What happens in our soul when I commit this sin?

First, there is a distance from the presence of God and from prayer., the principal way of relationship with the Lord. The consequences are grave. Once through my free choice I leave the fount of life and put my roots in muddy and fetid waters they will only produce filth, empty interior and stained relationships. We deepen ourselves each time in bad choices, some worse than before. We involve ourselves in darkness so dense that the Sun of Justice (God) that before shined with splendor inside of us appears to go out.

Our growth will be watered and “cared” for by the demon. In this way, what fruits will we be able to give? And if our life ends in this way, never would we be able to contemplate such light that radiates from the Sun. Therefore, only sin can result. Already this entails eternal evils.

These are the consequences that happen in our soul, therefore, it is poor still in which one says to respect our relationship with God for when we opt, we choose, we prefer to live in mortal sin we please and give pleasure to the demon. We become as dark as he is. None of the good works taht we do are capable of pleasing God and nor can they bring us merits to arrive to Heaven.

However, our soul when it is in the state of grace, or may when it breaks from grave sin, it resembles a plant rooted  in a river of pure water. It becomes fertile and lush.

But how to de free ourselves from mortal sin?

It is necessary to be humble and to recognize that we are sinners in confession. In this manner, we attract the heart of God that becomes our help in situations that we are not capable of overcoming. He will guard our soul as a centurion guards his city. We understand what is our brokenness that he turns into our strength.

In the measure that we draw ourselves near to him and prayer is the principle way, Jesus is going to introduce in  our soul the great fear of offending Him. God himself teaches us that vigilance is another important way to overcome our weaknesses. We only are vigilant to what we hold dear. Here our relationship enters with God or maybe a spirituality that is dearer to a Young Revolutionary (In Catholic terms, which is one who serves God in prayer and holiness, not in any other way.) St. Peter advises us:

“Be sober and vigilant! The devil, your enemy, walks about  you, seeking whom to devour” (1 Peter 5:8)

We do not need anything else but a vigilant spirit to be able to complete what is agreeable to God.

We have a deficiency of not seeking to be watchful because we forget what is dearest to us our relationship with God. If we forget what is important we do not give attention and we prefer to detour our focus and cede it to our carnal passions that bring us to mortal sin.

If we seek to understand the size of the evil that mortal sin realizes in our soul, no person would be capable of sinning.
