What Is the Church Teaching on Suicide?

Suicide is not willed by God, because He is the Lord of life

First and foremost, we must be clear that our God is the God of life – “choice because, life and you will live” (Deuteronomy 30). No wonder that he is called is the Creator, because he created all things. And how good is reading the creation narrative and hear what the Lord beheld His work and saw that it was good! (Gen 1:25). Finally, to create the human being, the man saw that it was very good (Gen 1:31). Ie, the human person, the man created by God is good, man’s creation was a good thing that the Lord has made, so has value, dignity and nobility because it was created and loved by Him.

Thus, any attack against human life is an evil, a serious sin. This the Catechism teaches us , because it violates a sacred thing: man’s life. And this is a gift, a value, a grace that came from on high, so no one has the right to take it from someone else or yourself. Offense to another’s life or against life itself deeply hurts charity, love of neighbor and love yourself, that should be cultivated as Jesus Christ taught us (Matt 22:39).

“Everyone is responsible for his life before God who gave it to him and that it is always the only and sovereign Lord” (CCC n. 2280). Thus, each must keep, preserve their own lives. In the book of creation, the Lord has entrusted to man care about created things, including man himself is included.

Who committed suicide is condemned?

Suicide is not willed by God, because He is the Lord of life, is the Creator of all things, who wanted and wants the good of everyone and everything. He does not put up with so much love, so made us, and we are the fruit of love for Him. So we should not kill the Father’s love for us.

“Suicide contradicts the natural inclination of the human being to preserve and perpetuate his life. […] Also offends love of neighbor because it unjustly breaks the ties of solidarity with family, national and human society, for which we have obligations to fulfill. “(CIC 2281)

It is evident that our instinct is survival, to seek to live. He who commits suicide imagines that it will solve their problems, but it creates others. If one who had to know how bad life is for your family, how long it takes to assuage the guilt of a father, a mother, a brother or relative, he/she would not commit such an act. The spiritual directors say that!

Despite the gravity of this sin, the Church does not condemn those who commit suicide. They are viewed with mercy. “Severe psychological disturbances, anguish or fear of temptation, suffering, or torture can diminish the responsibility of the suicide. […] We must not despair of the salvation of people who killed themselves. God can, in ways known to him alone, give them occasion of a salutary repentance. The Church prays for persons who attempted to take their own lives “(CCC 2282-2283).
